Are you moving to Germany? Are you visiting the country with your dog? Or are you simply learning the language because you like it?

Well, one of the coolest parts of learning a language is sharing the process with the people – or beings – that we love. That could mean to ask your German friends for help whenever you have a doubt.

Or speak in German with your bilingual mom, so you practice your fluency. Or even practice a few words with your dog! Wait, what? Is that possible? Of course! You can practice with your dog some dog commands in German. It’ll be fun and useful!

So if you’re ready for it, let’s learn 16 German dog commands, or as they say in Germany: “die Hundekommandos”.

16 German Dog Commands

Hier

It sounds a lot like the word “here” and that’s exactly what it means. It’s perfect to call your dogs if they’re far from you.

Sitz

This means “sit”.

So if you ever want them to stop moving around to give them a treat, this is the perfect word to use.

Hopp

This means “jump”. So if you want your dog to do a cool trick, this one would be it.

Bleib

This means “stay” and it’s used to tell the dogs to stay still.

Gib laut

This literally would mean “give loudly”. But with these words you’re actually asking your dogs to bark.

Platz

This means “down”. With this word they’ll absolutely lay down.

Weiter

Literally, it means “further”. But it’s used as a dog command to tell dogs to move.

How many times have we wanted our dogs to start moving? Maybe because we want to go somewhere together, whether that’s outside or inside the house? Well, now you only need to say “weiter”.

Lauf

This means “run”. Now that we’re talking about movement, this is a great word to use to get your dogs to run. That’s great exercise for them.

Gib Pfote

It means “give paw”. It’s basically like how we say in English “paw”.

Bei Fuß

Literally, this means by foot. But for dog commands is like saying “heel”, which means you’re instructing them to walk by your side.

Komm

This means “come”, and both the English and the German words sound very similar.

Aus

Literally this means “out”. But it’s used to tell dogs to drop something or take something out of their mouth.

Perfect for when your dogs grab something they shouldn’t and start chewing on them.

Hol’s

It means “bring it”. You can also just use “hol”, which means “bring”.

Have you ever been playing frisbee with your dogs and want them to bring it back? Well, “hol’s” is the perfect word for that. Of course, it works with anything you want them to bring back.

Fetch

This also means “bring”. So you could also use this word for your dogs to bring you something, like a ball you just threw out.

Rolle

This means “roll over”. Do you want to see a fun trick? Use this German word for your dogs to roll over.

Stopp

This means, as you may imagine, “stop”.

Celebrate Your Dogs

When our dogs do something great or correctly, like obeying our command, we like to celebrate them with a few motivational words. That’s something really important to do. It’s not just about giving them orders, but also about telling them when they do the right thing.

In English we usually say things like “good job” or “good dog”. Good news! In German they have their own words to do that:

Brav

It means “good”. What a great word to celebrate that your dog did something right or obeyed your command.

Braver Hund

This means “good dog”. A very sweet way to applaud your dog’s actions.

Gut gemacht

With this you’re saying “well done”. This is another perfect way to let your dog know they’re doing something right.
